The Old Town Beneath the Castle
A country railway carries you into the highlands to Iwamura — home to Japan's highest mountain castle and one of its longest castle-town streetscapes. In autumn, the train winds through a landscape of golden fields and mountain foliage before arriving in Iwamura. From the station, the road leads through the old town: past sake breweries that are still in operation, machiya houses turned into cafés and craft shops, and ancient stonework lining the streets.
From here, the road climbs towards the castle, where crimson maples frame the ancient stone walls. Iwamura Castle is also known for its lady lord — a woman who ruled this mountain stronghold during one of Japan's most turbulent centuries. Her story, and the fate of the keep, will be told at the summit.
Walk Through Samurai History and Charm
The day begins with your Rural Japan guide — a local English-speaking expert who knows this region as home — meeting you at your hotel in the Nakatsugawa or Ena area, or at JR Ena Station. Together you board the Akechi Railway, threading through forest, farmland, and tunnel until the city feels a long way behind.
The castle town of Iwamura stretches 1.3 kilometres along a single historic street — the longest castle town streetscape in Japan. Sake breweries, old merchant houses, and machiya townhouses line the way, many still in use today — as shops, cafés, and family homes. After passing through the town, the ascent begins. Stone walls emerge gradually from the trees. The climb takes 30 to 40 minutes. At the summit, the views open wide — and your guide shares the stories of this castle and the people who shaped it.
On the way back down, your guide will show you the best local café and the dishes you will not find anywhere else. The return journey on the Akechi Railway brings the day to a close at its own pace.
MEETING POINT: your Rural Japan guide will meet you at your hotel in the Ena or Nakatsugawa area, or at JR Ena / Nakatsugawa Station. Details confirmed upon booking.

PLEASE NOTE: we recommend starting no later than 11:00 AM, as historic buildings in the castle town close around 16:00.This is an outdoor tour in all weather — please bring sturdy walking shoes and a waterproof jacket.

A non-refundable deposit of ¥5,000 per person is required at the time of booking.
Cancellation fees are calculated based on the number of days before the experience date (JST).

Reservation Process
Select your date and number of guests — Click the booking button to open our online calendar. Choose your preferred date, time, and number of guests, then select the corresponding price and complete payment securely via Square.
Receive a personal email from us — After payment, we will personally send you a confirmation email with your full itinerary, meeting instructions, what to bring, your guide's name, and emergency contact details. Your tour is confirmed at this point. Please allow up to 24 hours for this email to arrive.
If we need to cancel — In the rare event that we need to cancel your booking on our end, you will receive a full refund.
