AUTUMN HIKE TO PANORAMA VISTAS FROM NAEGI CASTLE RUINS
Where the Rock Became the Castle

From late October through November, the ridgeline of Naegi Castle comes alive above the Kiso River — momiji burning against granite, the valley falling away beneath you. For seven hundred years, this mountain fortress stood here, built not against the landscape, but with it. Set on the boundary between two old provinces, with the river below serving as a natural moat, this rocky ridge was one of the most defensible positions in the region.
At the summit, the panorama opens wide — the Kiso River winding below, the mountains beyond, and the autumn colours spreading across the valley in every direction. Join a local guide and hike to Naegi Castle at the height of autumn.

From River to Castle
The day begins with your Rural Japan guide — a local English-speaking expert who knows this land as home — meeting you at your hotel in the Ena–Nakatsugawa area.

The walk follows the Kiso River into open countryside — as streets give way to forest, the castle ridge appears through the trees. Your guide points out what a visitor would walk straight past, and tells the stories this valley still remembers. Persimmons hang heavy on the branches by the roadside, glowing orange against the autumn sky — a sight that belongs to this season alone.

At the heritage museum, your guide brings the world of local samurai to life — their daily existence, loyalties, and the armour that remains from that era. The ascent is unhurried. Stone walls rise from the outcrops. A shrine appears among the trees, quietly transformed more than a hundred years ago. At the summit, the Kiso River winds far below, the ruins already deep in colour.

The walk back follows the mountain paths that samurai once used, taking a different route to Nakatsugawa Station. Before you part, your guide points you to the places locals love — where to eat, what to try, and where to go next in Nakatsugawa.
